SYV EAST Website Help us
make this site better
The EAST web site has had many people involved. It started with Nick
Mazza who built a wonderful site for the first 2 years of the program
but that was lost due to a server issue at the high school. Peter
Oliver took over and has worked with many including librarian and
web master Mrs. Storey. Liam Keane has contributed by designing and
building our current site. He and Peter maintain and update our web
site. They have used Macromedia's Dreamweaver.
Isla Vista Cliff Baseline Mapping
Working with Santa Barbara County geologists and Environmental engineers,
the EAST class is mapping the cliffs from Coal Oil Point to Campus
Point along the community of Isla Vista. This area experiences significant
erosion and is also densely populated. This has led to litigation
between property owners and the County regarding access and properties
condemned. Using Trimble XT and XM GPS units, the students are mapping
the bluff tops and the beach to establish a baseline for future work.
This has not been done before. Students Tim Manchester, Clay Garland,
Andrew Van Leuven, Kelly Lyon, Jason Lambert and others are involved
in this large project. Many pieces of technology are being used including
ESRI software (Arcview 9.0), Photoshop, digital cameras, Adobe software,
Microsoft software and Trimble units.
Geocoding Addresses
EAST students Kelly Lyon, Clay Garland, Andrew Van Leuven, and Kenny
Wilkens, were able to map the home addresses for all students attending
SYVUHS. They did this with Arcview 9.0, Microsoft Excel and Trimble
GPS units. The work is used for transportation needs assessment, safety
issues and planning purposes. They have presented their work before
the school administration and at World GIS Day November 19th, 2004
at Ventura College.
2nd Residential Units Informational Brochure
Recently a state of California Law was passed that allows building
a "granny unit" on property. These 2nd Residential units
have some restrictions based on location and zoning. EAST students
Allison Caughill and Megan Bosko have worked with the City of Solvang,
designing information that allows prospective property owners one
stop information about this possibility. As the population increases
and increasingly ages, people are looking for solutions and this option
is a valuable one for some people. The goal is to provide information
to make this option easier to understand.
Sedgwick Reserve Trail Plotting View

EAST student Adrian Evarts has led the way working with University
of California owned Sedgwick Reserve in mapping their extensive trail
system. The reserve has diverse ecosystems and topography that allows
field work by professional scientists and visits by many classes.
The trail maps will be used by Director Mike Williams for docents
who take classes on field trips and as an online resource for teachers
wanting to take their classes to the UC Reserve. Technology includes
GPS, GIS, digital photography, and web publishing. Adrian Evarts assisted
by Clay Garland, Tim Manchester and others has used Trimble XT and
XM units, Photoshop, Word and ERSI software.
Parent and Family Resources
EAST students have worked with Santa Ynez Valley Union High School
Counseling staff and administrators to create an up-to-date pamphlet
to give to parents and students regarding resources in the community
for their needs. These include counseling, tutorials, health and welfare
information. The students used Microsoft Publisher, Word, digital
cameras and Adobe Photoshop in putting together this important resource.
GIS Sharing
EAST students Daniel Schley, Tea Holt and Aimme DiMase have worked
to create a CD that allows EAST schools TIGER data for their county.
This one stop CD allows those schools a quick up and running access
to information and data that can often be difficult to obtain and
/ or download. They have sent this CD to all Hawaii Schools and are
working their way westward getting California Schools done in 2004
/ 2005. They are working with many pieces of software and downloading
materials including FTP programs, CD creators, Photoshop, digital
photography and Excel spreadsheets.

On Friday, November 19th, 2004 students Kelly Lyon and Clay Garland
represented the EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technologies) class
at Santa Ynez High School in a conference focused on GIS (Geographic
Information Sciences) at Ventura College on World GIS Day. Over 150
professionals from local agencies, cities, UCSB, and colleges attended
the day long conference. Santa Ynez was the only High School invited
to present and Lyon and Garland spoke clearly to a full lecture hall
on the EAST classes GIS efforts; past, present and future. They also
had to present and defend a poster created by Garland, Lyon, and classmates
(unable to attend) Andrew Van Leuven, Kenny Wilkins, Hector Vega,
Manny Garcia, Erin Gnekow and Breanna Schlaggs depicting their work.
For their efforts, they were judged by all presenters as best poster
in the conference beating out Conejo Valley Schools, SLO County, the
Cities of Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Oxnard, the Ventura County Fire
Department and numerous professional firms. "The students represented
the work of their classmates with passion, enthusiasm and knowledge,
" noted teacher Chip Fenenga. "They received more than their
share of positive compliments from UC professionals and industry representatives,"
continued Fenenga. "Probably the best moment for me was when
a question was asked during the follow up session about how they avoid
frustration and distractions with the complex technology, Kelly answered,
"it's either whine or shine."
Santa Ynez Valley Union High School Projects
Students make many posters for campus groups including departments,
drama, Friday Night Live, administration and athletics. These include
Track , Basketball and Volleyball records posters for motivational
use in the locker rooms. The EAST class has designed Standards posters
for all the Science classes. The EAST class has designed and printed
posters based on administrative needs for standardized ways of writing.
These are up in all rooms at the high school. They have made movies
and slide shows for Homecoming assemblies and sports banquets. The
EAST class has cooperated extensively with Student Council working
with them in areas of photography, posters for dances and homecoming
and announcements. Students make name badges for office, library and
science student TA's. Students have made presentations in other classes
and helped other students with software presentations including Powerpoint,
Flash, Web Design, and Mosaics in Math, Science, Social Studies and
English classes. Senior projects are required in English and the majority
of projects that involve technology are completed in this class. Students
have worked with faculty and staff helping them with software issues,
building a Spanish Web Site and setting up the Santa Ynez High School
Web Site. Every day people come to us and ask us to do many small
projects that benefit the school. Literally every student has helped
in these areas.
