This course prepares college-prep students for the rigors of four-year college admittance.  Students learn organizational skills, test taking strategies, and problem solving skills for all academic subjects.  There is subject specific tutorial as well as preparation for the SAT.  Also, there is an emphasis on writing, inquiry, and collaboration to aid the student's achievement in all classes.

Seniors who have not passed the California High School Exit Exam are required to be enrolled in the class, and juniors who have not passed by January of their junior year will also be enrolled.  The class focuses on the reading and writing skills needed to pass the exam.  Students do daily sustained, silent reading, write in journals, and practice writing skills.  Before each CAHSEE date, students do intensive test taking preparation in the state's English language arts study guide.

Internships are employment opportunities in which a student commits time to learn about a profession and to take part in meaningful experiences to acquire skills in the workplace.  Students are matched by interests with a business partner in the community to complete 90 hours of work for the employer.  Internships scheduled during the school day are unpaid positions.  Also, a student enrolled in an internship that occurs during the school day may not also be enrolled in Tutorial or Student Service.  Those students committing to an internship outside the school day may be paid.  All students enrolled in an internship whom choose to drop after the allowed add/drop period will have 5 credits of “F” placed on their transcript.

Driver Education prepares students for their provisional driving permit and their provisional license.  Included in the curriculum is the study of the text, Drive Right, and the DMV handbook.  Responsible, defensive, and sober driving is stressed.  The course is offered during 7th period to 10th graders during their sophomore year.  It is also offered during the summer; the summer offering is open first to sophomores and then, as room allows, to the oldest freshmen students.

This one semester freshman core course will cover the basic foundations of modern democracy as they have developed from the Greco-Roman world until today. Using primary sources, students will analyze the early democratic values demonstrated by philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle as well as the ethical principles that have arisen from Judeo-Christian tradition. The course will also focus on the increase of democratic ideals as developed in the English, American and French Revolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The course will conclude with a study of world geography and career opportunities. The students will be encouraged to learn the skills of interpreting primary source documents and writing short analytical historical essays. The course also includes a career awareness unit.

The Health course is designed to increase the students' knowledge about various aspects of health, thus enabling them to make intelligent decisions that affect his/her life. This course also satisfies education code requirements in the areas of substance abuse and sexually transmitted infections including AIDS/HIV infection.  Parents/guardians will have an opportunity to preview the materials used in the Family Life Unit.  They will be notified by mail for the preview date, time, and location.  This course also includes First Aid/CPR.

This is a one-year course designed to provide enrollees with the theoretical and practical experience to begin preparing for a teaching career.  Enrollees will be prepared to enter advanced training in a college or university teacher education program.  Students will develop skills in: providing instruction/supervision of students; communicating with students, staff, and parents; and utilizing resources and materials in planning developmentally appropriate curriculum.  Knowledge of licensing regulations for teaching, and employment and management skills will be emphasized.  Classroom instruction is combined with field experiences in local school sites.  All students will be placed in a related training site within the first four weeks of class.

This course is designed to instruct students in all phases of information retrieval based on the National Information Literacy Standards for student learning and to give them opportunities for practical experience in all phases of library procedure and operations.  Students will work with books, magazines, and computers in order to assist in the efficient operation of the library.  Computer applications will include multimedia presentations.  Students interpersonal and communications skills are enhanced while working with library patrons.  The skills learned prepare students to retrieve and use information throughout their lives.

This course is designed for students interested in sports medicine and related health careers.  Students will receive classroom instruction during the school day (one period between periods 1–6) in anatomy, physiology, healing process, CPR/First Aid/AED training, injury evaluation, athletic training and basic knowledge of sports medicine, personal training, physical therapy, chiropractic, physical education teacher, and fitness instructor.  In addition, students will take part in hands-on training outside of class with various sports and/or fitness facilities.  All students will be placed in a training site within the first four weeks of class.  The training site requires a minimum of 5 hours of the student’s time per week.

This course motivates students to increase their overall school performance (grades, credits, attendance), as well as monitor mood behavior (depression, aggression, etc.).  Course emphasis is on the following four life skills training units: self esteem enhancement, decision-making, personal control and interpersonal communication.  All units are taught within a “peer group” content.

 

6013                Restaurant Occupations

Restaurant Occupations’ students learn quantity food preparation and service while preparing and serving brunch and lunch to the staff and students at Santa Ynez Valley Union High School.  Enrollees in this program are also placed in paid training stations in a variety of restaurant and food service facilities in the Santa Ynez area.  The training site requires a minimum of 15 hours of the student's time per week.

The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the technical and creative skills required to produce quality video.  Grading is based on the effective completion of video projects.  Students are trained in many aspects of video production including camera operation, editing, interviewing, and project development.
