French 1 is intended to give the student an elementary speaking knowledge of the French language.  Understanding and appreciating the people of France and the French lifestyle is also an important part of French 1.  Other objectives are to develop basic skills in reading and writing French.  Most instruction is in the present tense, but past tense is also introduced.  At least a one thousand word vocabulary is developed.

This course is a seminar that requires concurrent attendance in French 3.  Students will be presented with many French literary authors.  Literature covered will include excerpts from various authors including works recommended by AP curriculum.  Students’ understanding of French culture will be enhanced through studying French cultural films as well as artists and their work during varied time periods.  Communication and conversational skills will increase through the additional vocabulary presented through the literature, films, and artists’ works studied.

Latin 1 is intended to teach basic grammar skills in the Latin language as well as to begin building an extensive vocabulary base in the language.  As Latin is generally not a spoken language, the focus will be on translating a mixture of classical texts.  A reasonable amount of time will be spent looking at Roman culture and history.  If space becomes limited, freshmen will have priority.

Latin 2 is a one-year course that focuses on further development of Latin reading and composition skills.  By the end of Latin 2, students will have completed a study in all the major Latin grammatical constructions, tenses, moods, etc.  Because Latin is primarily a written language, less time is needed for verbal skill than in a modern language course.  Students will be able to read most of the Latin authors in their original texts by course end.

Students will continue their study of the Latin language and Roman culture.  During this year, students will begin reading Virgil, Ovid, and various Roman authors in the original Latin.  Studies in grammar will focus on the uses of the subjunctive and Latin literary terms and techniques.

This course is for students who have mastered all of the Latin grammatical constructions. Students will prepare to pass the AP Exam in Virgil's Aeneid.   Each week students will focus on roughly 50-75 lines of Latin.  Each night students will receive a number of lines that they must scan, construct and translate.  In class, the students will review their reading and prepare for the next class.

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture.  Meaningful communication is the main goal of this course.  Instruction in the present tense is also included.  The student develops proficiency in Spanish by means of activities and materials designed to reinforce the realistic use of the language.  An active vocabulary of at least 1,000 words will be acquired.

Honors Spanish 2 is a course intended for students who have demonstrated exceptional ability in Spanish 1 and are capable of continuing at an accelerated rate.  It is also intended for those who already indicate a desire to go on to Honors Spanish 3 in the subsequent year.  Students will study verb tenses and other grammatical structures and further develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.  Oral communication will be emphasized early on as well as the study of Hispanic culture through selections of specific literary works, research projects, and community involvement.

This course provides students with the skills and information needed to continue the study of Spanish at the Advanced Placement level in the subsequent year.  Development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills will be at an accelerated pace.  Particular attention is placed on the acquisition of all verb tenses and the use of extensive vocabulary.  Students are expected to seek exposure to Spanish as it is used in daily life outside of the classroom (such as television, work, etc.) and to be prepared to relate their experiences in Spanish during class.  Regular attendance is a necessity.

This course is designed to provide the student with the skills and information needed to successfully challenge the Spanish Advanced Placement Exam in Language Structures.  Students will develop conversational skills and acquire additional control of vocabulary and word usage.  Students will increase their understanding of Spanish literature by a survey of some of the most representative writers in most genres.  Writing skills will be developed by means of essays dealing with literary themes encountered in the course of reading.  Students will also increase their understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Students will acquire the skills and information needed to achieve success on the AP exam in Spanish Literature.  Students will concentrate their study of Spanish literature by reading the works of authors designated by the Advanced Placement program of the College Board.  In addition, students can expect to obtain proficiency in composition, conversation and grammar which is equivalent to that of a fifth or sixth semester of college study.  Students will also engage in practice testing as part of their preparation for the exam.  Because the focus of the course is primarily the study of literature, students can expect a minimum of two hours of homework per day in order to accomplish the reading and writing assignments.  Activities in class will include lecture and discussion in literary analysis of the works read.
