Agriculture Science is a one year course for the student who wishes to explore the field of agriculture.  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the world of agriculture and technology.  It will give students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of human needs, behavior, biology, animal science, plant science, food science, processing, and marketing.  In addition, students will participate in leadership training activities, public speaking and have the opportunity to be a part of the FFA.  Students will receive hands-on instruction by utilizing the school farm laboratory, swine, sheep, and beef facilities, garden areas and greenhouse.

Agricultural Biology is a one-year, laboratory science course designed for the student with career interests in agriculture.  Using agriculture as the learning vehicle, the course emphasizes the principles, central concepts, and interrelationships among the following topics:  molecular and cellular aspects of life, growth and reproduction in plants and animals, plant and animal genetics, taxonomy of plants and animals, animal behavior, ecological relationships among plants, animals, humans and the environment, nutrition in animals, health and diseases in animals, and the similarities between animals and humans.  Note: Ag Biology satisfies the SYVUHS Biological Science graduation requirement.

This course is designed for advanced study of agriculture business opportunities and economics for students with interest in agriculture.  Through the course, the student will understand and apply basic economic principles as they relate to individual consumers, production agriculture, and agri-business management.  Life skills such as resumes, job applications, interview skills, and college and scholarship applications will be included.  The students will develop a “business” that will manufacture, determine prices, and market their products.  Students will keep accurate records of expenses, receipts, and profit/losses.  At the conclusion of the course, profits will be split equally between the partners.

This course will explore a variety of mechanical skills and opportunities.  Students will develop abilities in the following areas: electricity, plumbing, surveying, rope work, concrete, ARC, MIG and oxyacetylene welding, woodworking.  Basic design and fabrication of individual projects will be available.  The course emphasizes hands-on activities as a learning method.

Prerequisite:  Agricultural mechanics 4021

This course further prepares students for employment, or entrepreneurship in agricultural mechanics occupations including: farm power, construction, machinery and equipment, welding and other areas.  This class also prepares students to continue in advanced occupational training in this field.  Students will continue to develop, enhance and perfect their skills in the areas of arc, oxyacetylene and MIG welding.  Design and fabrication will be emphasized.  Individual student projects will be designed and constructed.  Additional areas of instruction will include electrical wiring, irrigation systems, and basic principles of construction.

 

4008                       Integrated Animal Science  (P)   (formerly titled “Animal Care 1)

Prerequisite:   Agricultural Biology, Physical Science, Biology, or instructor’s approval.  Student must also be able to provide own transportation to community work site

This course provides information, activities and skills in areas of scientific method, classification systems, mammalian production, production management, and health with emphasis on anatomy, physiology, reproduction, nutrition, mitosis, meiosis, respiration and genetics.  Emphasis is placed on mammals that are important to the human culture as we know it.  Homework varies by unit but averages one assignment per week.  Lab activities will account for 25%-30% of class time.  Tests will be given regularly.  Students are expected to participate in class discussion and other structured events. Note-books are required and will be graded periodically.  All students will be placed in an animal science related training site within the first four weeks of class.  The training site requires a minimum of ten hours of the student’s time per week.

Prerequisite:   Integrated Animal Science with a “C” or better or instructor's approval.  Student must also be able to provide own transportation to community work site.

Students learn advanced care and handling of large and small animals.  Instruction includes:  health & sanitation, nutrition, grooming, restraining, medication administration, evaluation of animals, marketing and management techniques, anatomy & physiology, evaluation of animals, and record keeping.  As part of this course, all students will be placed in an animal care related job training site within the first four weeks of class.  The training site requires a minimum of ten hours of time per week.

Prerequisite:  Student must participate in the Santa Barbara County Fair

The Livestock Management course meets outside of the regular Santa Ynez High School hours during spring semester and early summer, with 145 hours of participation necessary for 10 credits.  Students are instructed in market livestock production, feeding management, grooming practices, and showmanship.  Livestock are exhibited at the Santa Barbara County Fair.  Ownership of livestock is not necessary, but participation in the county fair is required.

This course is designed to instruct students in the growth, production, and care of plants.  Students will learn plant propagation, growth, needs of plants, potting and transplanting techniques, plant identification, basic floral design and landscaping.  Students will also be involved in practical learning projects on the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School’s campus and in the community. This year-long course meets Santa Ynez High School's Fine Arts requirement for graduation.
